Thai Amazingness

I absolutely LOVE Thai food. The problem is, in Weiden, you can't really get any good Thai food...or in Wimberley for that matter. You really have to go to the big cities or to Thailand to get some good Thai food. Well, if you are in or around Nuremberg, then look no further! Mom and I have found the best Thai restaurant this side of the Atlantic!

Mom's flight is tomorrow at 6:50am, so we decided that getting a hotel near the airport would be the best bet, since getting up SUPER early, say 3, is not fun at all...especially when you have to drive an hour both ways. When looking for a hotel, almost everything was booked! I couldn't believe it...until I remembered that there was some sort of convention going on in Nuremberg this weekend...damn. Well, we found a hotel in Furth, for a "reasonable" price...and when I say "reasonable" I mean not really.

Whatever. We at first wanted to go into Nuremberg, but then once we got here decided against that. I googled some restaurants in Furth and we decided on going to this Thai place down the street from here. It got good reviews, so we thought it would be decent. We were absolutely wrong. IT WAS AWESOME! Seriously. I haven't had such good Thai food in a long time. Seriously...it was unbutton-your-jeans good.

We started off with Tom Ka Gai...a coconut soup with tomatoes, chicken, mushrooms and awesomeness. I could have licked the bowl. If the main course was going to be this good, we were going to be in trouble of being super full. I asked the waiter what he would suggest. He told me the crispy duck breast on top of a red curry sauce with mixed veggies. Sounds good. We got that and Pad Thai with chicken, beef and pork. Holy Jesus! It was mind blowing good. I cannot give this place any better reviews. It was so good. Between mom and I, we polished off both the main dishes. Yup, I had to unbutton my jeans on the walk home.

So, if you are anywhere near Furth, then you MUST...no, it is your civic duty...to go to this place. I already told Markus that we must come here for a date night. I would drive all that way from Weiden just to go to this place again. I hope I have dreams about it tonight...

My sweet Amelia

The most precious video ever!

**Please excise the mess in the room...we were getting ready for the party and cleaning the apartment was the last thing on my mind (since the party was at my in-laws!).**

Birthday Party!

The birthday girl and Daddy!
So, for Amelia's first birthday bash we decided to go all out. Well, in truth it was a joint birthday party for both Amelia and I, but you all know who the real star was. Yup, Amelia.

Mom and I were baking fiends on Friday. We made brownies, cake pops, cupcakes, rice krispie treats, pulled pork and baked beans. My apartment smelled WONDERFUL on Friday! We had loads of food for Saturday...better to have too much than too little!
Saturday, we get to Hirschau early so that we can set up and so that Amelia will hopefully take a nap. She went down a bit before 1 and was still out at 2:45, so I went in and gently woke her up since people were supposed to start coming at 3. She woke up pretty easily and was in a super mood for the party! Woohoo!
The guests arrived and then kid chaos began. It was a wonderful type of chaos though. All the kids played wonderfully together. Amelia has a blast. The grown ups had a great time too! I would say that the party was a complete success! However, I think in the coming years a few friends and I are going to do joint parties for the kids since their birthdays are all within 2.5 weeks of each other.

At the craft table...the kids could draw on the table and decorate their gift bags...it was a hit!

Completely knackered!
Needless to say, Amelia slept pretty good that evening!

One Year!

I still can't believe that my little girl turned one yesterday! It is crazy to think that this first year is already over! How weird. It is crazy what a difference a year makes...

WEBMU 2010...Success!!!

Well, we have been back from Hamburg for a few days, and being the slacker I am, I am just now getting to writing about the trip. It was wonderful (minus a few mental breakdowns, but hey, that is what one should expect when travelling with a baby...).

We left Weiden on Friday, September 10, at 3:50am...yup, in the morning. Markus drove like the wind, and even with a half hour break, we were in Hamburg a little after 9:30am. Sabine, Markus' sister, was already at work, but her roommate was home...unfortunately, she was out on a jog when we got there, so we had to walk around their adorable neighborhood and were forced to go to a pretty cool cafe called Cafe Literature...darn. It was nice. They had little play boxes with books and colored pencils for the kids that came, which Amelia just adored. :) The coffee wasn't too bad either.

We headed back after about an hour or so to Sabine's apartment. This time, her roommate Silvia was in. We were able to unload our stuff and take a nap before Sabine came home. She took a half day vacation, so she was home around 1:30. We walked around some more and ended up at a pretty cool burger joint for dinner. Amelia loved the fries, and actually ate almost an entire burger patty, minus a few bites. Nice.
We went home and made it an early night...mainly because a little one decided that, no, she did not want to sleep in her travel bed. She only wanted to scream. She would only sleep with someone next to her. So, I downed a glass and a half of wine and went to bed with her. Markus was a champ and took the couch. Such a lovely husband. :)

That night was horrid. Amelia woke up about thirty two thousand times...kicked me roughly the same number of times...basically, I got about 4 hours of sleep. Great. Well, we got up, got some breakfast and headed off to the Starbucks to meet the other bloggers.

Now to chat about the meet-up! A big thanks to our hosts! Ian from Letters Home, No Apathy Allowed, Emily from Transkitten and PapaScott. It was fabulous! In addition to seeing some old faces from last year's meet up in Munich (TQE, This Non-American Life, Germany Doesn’t Suck, Regensblog, and Snooker in Berlin), I got to meet some new faces ((Resident on Earth, 50% of my DNA, HeisseScheisse, Cheeseburgers and Sauerkraut, and No Ordinary Homestead). It was a great time! Unfortunately, our camera decided to die and the extra batteries that we had with us...well, they weren't charged. So, if you'd like to see more pics of the meetup, you can head over to these blogs too...they are all awesome photographers, and I'm thinking about swiping some of their photos for my personal photo album (giving credit where credit is due of course!!).
So, now to the fun. We had a great walk around Hamburg by a real expat tour guide! She was awesome and if you are ever in Hamburg, you should have a tour from her! She rocks! Her name for some reason escapes me, so you other Webumers out there, please feel free to refresh my memory...
Then we ended the tour at a restaurant called the Kartoffelkeller (the potato cellar). It was well...how to put this nicely...the waitresses had to wear potato sack dresses. The waitress wasn't too nice...well, she just rubbed me the wrong way when I came in with the stroller (there were two in the group and I came in last at this place) and said, not so under her breath, "Ah, scheisse!". Yes, there wasn't too much room, but you could at least ask me nicely to leave it in the hallway! And then I asked if there was a high chair..."Leider nicht" (unfortunately not). Huh? What kind of restaurant is this? My answer..."ok, gut." But I was kind of bitchy about it. Whatever. The food was good, but the menu was pretty misleading. And good Lord they liked putting pepper on everything...at least what I ordered...

Ok, that afternoon, we had to ourselves to take a disco nap or do whatever we wanted to do. Well, a nap was definitely in our future. Fortunately for Amelia, she passed out when I was carrying her...Unfortunately for me, she woke up as soon as we got back to Sabine's (about 30 minutes later). Luckily, I have a wonderful husband who took her for a while so that I could get a quick nap in! Then, once we got up, we decided to head to the store to grab some stuff for Amelia for dinner and walk around a bit. It was quite lovely I must say. The Alster Lake in Hamburg is great. There are lovely walkways all around it and it really is gorgeous.
When we got back to Sabine's, I realized we were going to be about an hour late meeting everyone for dinner...we were about an hour and a half late. Oops. No worries...they had just ordered, so we quickly ordered. We got our food before the people who actually arrived on time, and I felt a bit bad, but I was a bit too hungry to worry too much. They got theirs pretty soon after though.

Then it was time for one of my favorite activities of the trip, the Queer Expidetion. TQE takes us out each year to a gay bar in the city and we just have a great time. Last year in Munich, I was 8.5 months pregnant, so I am pretty sure that was a sight in a gay bar...this year not so much...the guys at the door were just wondering what all these straight and a couple gay people were doing. Whatever. We were accepted pretty quickly and we had a few people come over to chat and the waiter (a dead ringer for Moby) was awesome.

That night, Amelia was perfect...she still slept with me in the bed and Markus was on the couch, but she only woke up once real quick and actually slept in until 7:15! Woohoo! What a birthday present!

I really wanted to go to the Fischmarkt that morning. Amelia was in an awesome mood, so I thought we would be in the clear...on the way to the Fischmarkt, everything changed. She went into her little terror mode and basically screamed the entire time there. It was hard since all I wanted was a nice time there looking at the stalls. Oh well. She screamed, and screamed, so we had to go. People were looking at Markus like he was trying to kidnap her. Yup, definitely time to go. In the car, the theme was the same...blood curdling screams...not fun...and definitely wearing on my nerves. I somehow got her to sleep, so we dropped Sabine off to put stuff in the fridge and we ran to fill up the gas for the next morning. Everything was going so good, then something woke her up, and, you guessed it, more screaming. This was not how I envisioned my b-day...not by a long shot! By the time we made it to brunch, I had basically cracked. Thank you Sarah for helping me calm down...

The rest of the day we took it easy. A bit of playing at the Alster, a lovely cafe on the canal...and we cannot forget the wonderful 2 hour nap! That was a much better end to my birthday than the beginning!

All in all, it was a wonderful trip. Hamburg survived being infiltrated by some whiny expat bloggers. We got some looks, because we were loud! Markus even commented on how loud we were...my response, "Well, you get a group of mostly Americans together...."

It was great. I can't wait for next year! Maybe it will be in Regensburg...oh, or Berlin! I'll just have to wait and see...

WEBMU 2010

Woohoo!! Markus and I are leaving at 4 am tomorrow to head up to Hamburg to meet up with some fellow expat bloggers for the weekend! Can't wait!

Now it is off to bed...

My new arch nemesis

I have a new arch nemesis...this stupid yeast diaper rash that Amelia has and hasn't been able to get rid of with Desitin or the stuff the doc gave us. Grrr.... Poor little Amelia's stuff was so red and when I went in to wipe she just screamed her little head off. Thankfully, I had a conversation today with a good friend LeAnn about essential oils. I was telling her about these Compeed patches for fever blisters. She then told me about her friend who uses tea tree oil to cure them and that she also uses tea tree oil to help out yeast infections. She told me she has tried it out in the diaper area of her boys and it definitely helps out.

So, here we come to tonight. After changing Amelia and seeing that her goods were just completely red, we let her run around bottomless for about 20 minutes or so to help air her out. She enjoyed it. She especially enjoys peeing on the floor...which she did...stealthily. I didn't notice it until about an hour later.

So, putting her into her pj's, I put on the stuff that the doctor gave us. More screaming. I was able to get her to sleep. Then I put her in her crib. Screaming. I let her scream for a bit, but gave in and settled her down again and put her in her crib. Screaming. So, I looked up an aromatherapy remedy for diaper rash using tea tree oil. Found one...quickly whipped it up. I got Amelia and changed her diaper, washing her with a warm washcloth...that seemed to help. I put on some of the oil. Settled her down again. Put her to bed. Only a bit of screaming and the off to dreamland. Pfew! I will use this forever! I don't know how much it has helped and won't know until I change her again, but it settled her down quick.

I found it here, and it is pretty simple.

1/2 cup of sweet almond oil
2-3 drops of tea tree oil
2-3 drops of lavender oil
4 tablespoons of water

Put in a glass jar and shake. Use just a bit at a time (I use a dropper so I can put a few drops at a time on the affected area). Always be sure not to double dip...

I really have high hopes for this remedy. I seriously hope that it works.

Now, it is off to bed for Markus and I since we have an early morning ahead of us...

Best of friends

Amelia and Charlie are becoming the best of friends. I know that in the coming years they are going to be getting into a lot of mischief together...great. :)

Chiemsee

This past weekend we went to the Chiemsee area (at the foothills of the Alps) to see our good friends Hansi and Doris. They live in a itt-bitty village called Marwang. It has a cute church, is surrounded by lovely fields and loads of farms. It was a nice little retreat.

Markus and Amelia with the lovely countryside in the background.
When we got there, the weather was a bit of crap, so we decided to go to the indoor pool in Prien. It was nice, but I don't think it 7.90 Euro for 2 hours nice...it is, however, directly on the Chiemsee, so I really shouldn't have expected anything less. The tiles on the floor were so slippery, I almost fell about 5 times with Amelia, Markus the same amount, and Amelia did actually fall 3 times. One positive thing for it is that all of the pools were very warm, so we could go all over the place (i.e. in the baby pool, main pool and the "hot" tub). Markus took Amelia on the slide...I don't know if she was a fan...it was completely dark most of the time...I didn't like it too much. I'm not a fan of the dark though.

"Uncle Hansi...You're tall..."
It was pretty cute in the "hot" tub though...it had the temperature of kid's bath water, so it wasn't a real hot tub. Amelia got plenty of smiles...and she was flirting with this cute gay couple for about 10 minutes. That was pretty funny. Then our 2 hours were up and we had to go.

Amelia being sure we all know that there is a light up there...

When we got back to H&D's house, Doris had already started making homemade pizza. There were two, one with tuna and super spicy and another non-spicy one with ham. I ate the one with ham as I am not a fan of tuna on my pizza...It was lovely!

Mmmmmm...pizza....
Hansi always have lovely wine. He just joined this club where they send you 3 different organic wines every quarter. They are decently prices (between 5 and 8 Euro) and absolutely AMAZING! Check them out! Delinat...seriously good wine. I have already ordered some for when mom comes and they just arrived today! Can't wait to try them out!

Hansi giving Amelia an olive...she loves them.
So, back to our trip...We get Amelia to bed at her normal time, around 8:30 and we stay up chatting until around 11, at which time we were all tired and decided to call it a night. Oh, how I wish it was a good night. Amelia decided to be up at 1 and not want to sleep in her bed anymore...ok, fine, come and sleep with us. That was fine before...before she tossed and turned ALL NIGHT LONG!! Good lord! I think Markus and I really only slept those first two hours and then roughly 10 minutes of every hour...otherwise there was a hand, or a foot, or a farting butt in our face...not fun. Needless to say, there was lots of coffee to be had that morning.

Walking over to the ponies...Amelia likes to walk holding hands when outside...which makes for a seriously cute picture

After our loads of coffee, Amelia was ready for a nap...only after being up for about an hour...not usual, so I am guessing she slept just as horridly. So, I put her down, and she slept for almost an hour and a half! That was ok by me. We got to chat some more without chasing her around and keeping her away from the cats...she LOVES cats, but these two were petrified of her.

Looking at the ponies
So, when she got up, we went to go first look at Hansi's little vineyard that he has planted and look at the Shetland Ponies. In Marwang, there is a Shetland Pony breeder and they are really nice animals. Very sweet and cute. So, if you're in the market for a Shetland Pony, get one here.
Then it came time for us to leave...sad, but I know that we'll see them again soon. They must come up to Weiden for a weekend next summer (or earlier) since we've been there twice now...hint hint Hansi! :)

Look! A Pony!!!

Updates

So, since I have been neglecting the blog, I have a few updates...

Our neighbors from hell are still around. However, after our little altercation, I didn't see them until yesterday, so a good 3 weeks. Mr. Polish Prick was coming home with his dog as Markus, Amelia and I were on our way out with Charlie. Luckily we met them outside and not in the hallway. Charlie really wanted to go over and give the guy a piece of his mind, but we thought better of it and made him sit next to us as they walked by. I gave the guy a pretty neutral look...he, as per the norm, gave me a pretty horrid look. Whatever.

Oh, and have I heard back from housing management about my complaint and if there was anything they could do? Nope. Not a peep. It has been 3 weeks. This doesn't bode well for our new housing management peeps (we just got new ones in July or so...).

Amelia is doing wonderfully though. We had her U6 (her 1 year checkup) on August 31st. The doctor was quite impressed with her development. She was really quick at taking the tower apart and finding the little toy in the bottom...and promptly taking it out. And she also followed directions given to her by the doctor to bang two toys together. That is one of Amelia's fav things to do...that and put objects into other objects...like a ball into box and shake it around until the ball goes flying out.

She is quite small. She's in the 10th percentile for weight and the 40th for height. The doctor even wrote in her notes, "sehr zierliches kind" (very dainty child), but then also wrote down, "sehr gut entwickelt" (very well developed), so I'm not worried at all. She runs around a lot, and eats a lot...so she just burns off everything that she eats. Hey, and it is MUCH better for my back that she's so light...I know with our next one in a few years, I'll be cursed with a giant baby...I just know it.

Amelia's stats as of August 31st:
7720 grams
72.5 cm long
44.5 cm head circumference

So, all in all, the past three weeks have been good...not too eventful. We went to the Chiemsee to visit our friends, Hansi and Doris (post to come) and had a nice weekend. This weekend we have no plans, but then next weekend we have huge plans!

Next weekend is the WEBMU (Whiny Expat Blogger Meet Up). It is in Hamburg and is conveniently over my birthday. ;) I finally get to meet one blogger, Tiffany @ NOH (a fellow Texan I might add!), that I have become friends with because we just started chatting through our blogs (and then on Facebook). And I get to see some bloggers I haven't seen since the last meet up in Munich. Last year was a blast and I can't wait for this years! Especially since it is in Hamburg...Markus sister (and Amelia's godmother), Sabine, lives in Hamburg. She is really great. And my birthday present from her is that she'll watch after Amelia Saturday night (so that Markus and I can hit up some gay bars with the Expats) AND Sunday night (so that Markus can take me out for my b-day...hint, hint Markus). So excited!

Then, two days after we get back from Hamburg, my mom comes!! Talk about an action packed September!! Can't wait!

So sorry blog...

...but yet again, I have been neglecting you. I am sorry. I know I get a day a week all to myself thanks to Amelia-Oma Tag, but really, all I want to do then is clean up the house a bit and sleep. Maybe go out shopping without a wee one clinging to me or tossing bananas on the floor. I know I'll get the motivation to post more, but for now, a few posts every now and then will just have to do...
