Dear Amelia,
Today you are 3 weeks old...a whole 21 days! My how the time flies. It seems like yesterday I was screaming bloody murder in the Kreisssaal at the hospital :). You are still the cutest thing that I have ever seen...you are even cuter than Charlie when he was a puppy, and that says a lot because he was an awfully cute puppy :). But seriously, could you be any more precious?
There are so many things that you are starting to do it is amazing. For starters, you are a VERY good sleeper...this makes mommy and daddy really happy. The past two nights, you are sleeping about 5 or 6 hours straight. I know that there will be nights when this will definitely not be the case, so we are cherishing those nights when you do sleep lots. When you sleep, you make the cutest noises too...you grunt (I think your just pooping or pushing or both), sometimes you snore, you sigh, and sometimes you make this high pitched noise that is pretty funny.
What is really cool is that you are starting to focus on things that are a bit further away. When daddy came home the other day, you heard the noise and looked in that direction. It might have been a fluke, but it was an awesome fluke :). Also, you can focus on our faces when we are a bit further away. This is pretty cool. Some things you really like to look at are the red wall in the living room with the picture frames on it, and shadows on the white walls...all of these contrasty things are just so freaking cool to you right now.
You are also doing wonderfully at lifting your head. When you're awake, we have some tummy time. You like this tummy time too :). We practice on turning your head from side to side...you do this all on your own and the first time you did it, mommy and daddy were so proud. Also, you can lift your head really well, and hold it there for a couple of seconds, then your head is just too heavy, and you have to let it fall...but you're getting better and better every day :). Also, when you're on your tummy, you LOVE to kick your feet and it moves you just a bit. This is pretty cool...maybe next week you'll be crawling :). Ok, maybe not that quickly, but you know what I mean.
You are growing like crazy too. I can tell that when I change you, your chicken legs aren't so much chicken legs anymore...they're getting a cute layer of fat on them and rolls are starting to form. I love it. Oh, and daddy loves the fact that your cheeks are getting chubbier as well. He has this thing for cheeks...we've had this discussion. And your hair is getting longer...I still can't believe all that hair you were born with. Some of your clothes almost don't fit anymore. The newborn stuff will probably last another week, if that. So, it looks like mommy and daddy and you are going to be making a shopping trip next weekend...luckily, that is when mommy wants to show you off to her friends in Regensburg, so we can do some shopping there. FUN!
But, I have saved the best for last. There is one thing that you are starting to do that completely melts my heart and makes me love you more and more (if that is at all possible!). You are smiling. True, this happens when you are asleep, but it is a full on gummy smile, and you've got these cute little dimples in your cheeks. I tried to get a picture of it yesterday, but you got camera shy and stopped smiling. You also do this when you are nursing, so this makes me think that you are dreaming about booby, which you know, is quite alright :). That or you're dreaming about playing with Charlie when you're older...that is totally possible too.
Speaking of Charlie, you really like him. When he runs around, you try to follow him with your eyes. It is quite cute. He really likes you too. He keeps licking your head and your hands, and one time he got a good face lick in there, and you didn't mind at all...I'm betting you two are going to be the best of buds when you get a bit older.
Alright my precious sugar pea, you are wonderful. I can't imagine our life right now without you...no doubt it would be a bit dull around here without you. You bring a certain pizazz to our life that we wouldn't trade for the world. Yup, you're definitely a keeper!
Love you,
Mommy

12 Days
Amelia is 12 days old today...and good lord she is growing. She is a really good eater, and so in the last week, she has gained 310 grams!!! That is 10.9 ounces for those of you in the US...yes, she eats a lot! Every 2 hours lately. I think she is going through a growing spurt. The newborn clothes that are so freaking cute, are going to be too small for her in about a week or two...and the cute socks that her great-grandmother gave to her are already a bit too small...but blame that on the gargantuan feet.
oh, and I can't drink enough of this tea that helps you produce more breast milk....not because it tastes good mind you, but because of what it does...help out the milk supply. Luckily, my boobies are producing more than enough, and every two hours they are pretty much full...and leaking. (like right now...little girl hasn't eaten in 3 hours, but the girls are ready for her...I know, I know...TMI, TMI...) My nipples are another story all together. They hurt. Especially when she first latches on. But the pain is getting less. I put black tea bags on them after every other nursing session (a tip from my midwife) and I use lanolin.
Markus is such a help too. He cleans up after meals, cooks, takes little girl in the morning so that I can get an extra hour of sleep (and this will unfortunately end next week, so little girl and I will be napping lots during the day together), and he is here for moral support. I seriously don't know what I would do without him. I have gained a lot of respect for single mothers this way though simply because I would be lost if it weren't for Markus. That and crying at every little thing...
Yesterday, we tested out our Ergo Baby with infant insert. This thing rocks! Thank you Tammy for suggesting this one! We went on a 20 minute walk with it yesterday...little girl could have gone longer, but I am still not 100%, so we took it easy. Then at night I wanted to test it out as I cooked. It worked wonderfully. I wasn't standing at the stove mind you. I made a pie crust and a quiche filling all in my food processor. I had to wash it out once (after the pie crust)...all this with Amelia strapped on. At one point, she was none too happy about this, but she only screamed for about 3 minutes (I was at a critical point in the pie crust and couldn't put her down) and then she passed out. When I was ready to put the quiche in the oven, I took her off and laid her down on the couch since I didn't want her getting near all that heat in the oven...plus I had to bend over, and I didn't want her falling out! But cooking with baby strapped on was a success, so I'm sure that later, doing the other house chores will also be ok with her strapped on.
Markus did get this awesome swing chair thing that the midwife highly recommended. It is from Chicco, and I think that little girl will like it, but I think that she has to get used to everything first. But this chair thing is nice. It is really portable, so I can take her in the bathroom with me when I take a shower, or put her in front of the kitchen door while I'm cooking. It's got these cute little animals on it too that move when she's rocked...she likes those.
That is about all. Tomorrow Markus will pick Charlie up for the day, so I'm sure we'll have some cute pictures of those two tomorrow that I'll have to get up. Now I have to go annoy Amelia to encourage her to wake up...mommy's boobs hurt.

Dear Amelia
Dear Amelia,
Yesterday you turned a week old. My goodness you are a precious little thing. You have totally stolen my heart, and of course Daddy's. He is madly in love with you too! You are just the sweetest baby. On Monday, September 21, we came home from the hospital with you. You were perfect for the 3 minute ride home. You seemed to like your car seat...all 5 minutes or so that you were in it. We'll see how it goes tomorrow when we go to Hirschau for the first time. That drive is a bit longer :).
You have the most precious face that I have ever seen and sometimes I just can't stop staring at you. Yesterday, I caught daddy doing the same thing, but I don't blame him. You are pretty darn cute.
You have the cutest cry. You kind of squeak when you need to take another breath. I believe this is your hunger cry because as soon as you get booby in sight, you stop and latch on immediately, which is also incredibly cute.
You are definitely a good eater. Every chance you get, you want to nurse. I believe you think I'm only good for mommy milk, but I believe that later, you'll find that I'm much more than a milk machine :). The other way that we know you are a good eater is that since coming home from the hospital until yesterday (your real one week birthday) you put on a whopping 210 grams. The midwife was really impressed. She thinks you are going to have some lovely baby fat rolls later :). I wouldn't mind that. And daddy would really like your cheeks to get bigger...cheeks are his favorite things. He'll be pressing them lots in the future. You'll get used to it. I did :).
You are a good sleeper too...knock on wood...You really enjoy being swaddled at night and when you're cranky. You calm down pretty much immediately. You're not a big fan of the pacifier yet, but hopefully that will come with time. You are a big cuddler though. When you are cranky, if I lay next to you, you tend to calm down pretty much immediately as well. We need to get Daddy trained on this one too :). **I forgot to add that when your daddy is holding you, you tend to calm down immediately as well. He's really good at that :). He was able to calm you down when you were still in my belly (which mommy loved and made her able to sleep). He's got a good touch.
You are quite adorable when you dream. You smile (which could also possibly be gas, but we'll just say you're dreaming of booby, which is probably true...), your little eyes move around, and sometimes you startle yourself and your hands shoot up and it is really pretty cute.
Tonight and tomorrow are big times for you. Tonight is when you get your first bath. I'm sure that will be loads of fun. Tomorrow, we are headed to Hirschau where you get to meet loads more relatives and your puppy Charlie. He is really a good boy and I'm sure you'll love him right off the bat. I think, though, he'll really begin to like you when you start eating solid foods and you drop some, or give him some or let him lick your fingers.
So, happy one week birthday my little girl. I still can't believe that you are already here and have been for a whole week. You're already growing up too fast...
Love you lots,
Mommy

Amelia Sabine
Our sweet little girl was born on September 18, 2009 at 2:10am. She weighed 3190 grams and was 52 cm long. She is so freaking cute! I had no epidural because when they finally got around to checking me, I was already 8 cm and do it was too late for one. But I survived and i now know how those women felt giving birth in the fields without pain killers. Luckily, I wasn't in a field, but in a hospital where I had a wonderful doctor. I now have HUGE amounts of respect for those women who do home births or choose to go without drugs. I'll be posting my birth story later when I have more than one hand free...I'm nursing right now...I'm such the multi-tasker! And now, without further ado...here's a pic of our sweet Amelia...
And of course one with the proud daddy....
I'll be getting one of me and Amelia up once I feel like a human again :).

Quote of the pregnancy...
Mom and I were in Kaufland buying stuff for my birthday dinner for tomorrow night. We were riding up the escalator thing and we were each kind of in our own world when all of a sudden mom says something that just about makes me pee my pants...
"So, do you think if your water breaks while were on this thing, we'll get electrocuted?"
Wow...where did she get that one from...but I guess it is a serious concern. I tried googling it, and couldn't find anything...the mystery continues...

Scared out of my wits...
I need to admit this at some point in time to myself, so why not on my blog for the world (or the few people who read this) to see.
I am absolutely freaked out about giving birth. It is more of this fear of the unknown that is getting to me. If I knew beforehand that everything is going to go smoothly and I won't have to have an emergency c-section, and that the birthing experience will be great, then I think I'd be fine with it. Now, don't get me wrong, I know what lies before me. As a friend Tammy put it, "It fucking hurts...and yes, I have to use that word", so I know it is not going to be a walk in the park. However, it is just the closer and closer that the due date comes (next Thursday...AHHHHH!!!) the more and more that I am thinking about the actual logistics of getting this little bugger out of me. It can only happen one of two ways, yes. But which way will it actually happen. I'm totally hoping for natural (with the help of modern medicine in the form of an epidural), so please keep your fingers crossed or thumbs pressed or both that that is the way that it will happen.
If it has to come down to a c-section, then I'm cool with that too...as long as little girl is healthy. But that is also major surgery, and I've only been under the knife once and it was an out-patient procedure.
On a side note, little girl is the most active she's been in days...she's a movin' and a groovin'. Could this be a sign that she's wanting out. I'm already wanting to give her the eviction notice, but I don't think that she's quite ready...plus Markus is in Berlin, so I hope that she waits until Friday. (He can always come home early, but he's at a pretty cool conference where he can rub elbows with some pretty interesting people, so I want him to enjoy that and get as many contacts as possible...)
On another side note, my birthday is on Saturday and Markus is getting me a pedicure...I'm so freaking excited about that!

Mom is coming!
Mom is on her plane and should be getting into Frankfurt in about 45 minutes and then hop on over to her flight to Nuremberg...so excited!
Luckily, little girl has also decided to wait for the arrival of her grandma before making her long awaited appearance. What a good girl...now she can come. I'm ready.
